i remember the first time i saw him being carried out to the hospital, i think i just got out of school that day. i was just only 7 years old when i saw strange men in my house strapping my grandfather into a stretcher. i was scared
he was lying on the couch because he wasn’t allowed to sleep on the bed with my grandma, we were afraid he would get her sick too.
they told me his lungs were filled with water, i had to watch him lie in the hospital bed pitifully.
i was only 7, i couldn’t grasp on the idea that my grandfather would no longer welcome me home from school, and that he would never get to see me graduate.

on the day of the funeral, i tried to snap my fingers
my uncle taught me how to snap my fingers
my uncle was also only in high school, my grandpa wouldn’t get to see his son graduate.

we went to a buddhist temple afterwards, we all wore a white headband, and after the ceremony was done, we lit a fire behind the temple and burned the headbands. i didn’t know why everyone was crying
