I'd probably go with the second option I listed and put the animal and gender together. Ex: Catgirl. It kind of is the same as a Centaur or a Mermaid. They aren't really furries or anything of the sort. They're their own category of human and animal hybrid, so I'd just call them a catgirl, catboy, whatever it is instead of a furry ^^ Of course, this is just my own reasoning. You can call them whatever you feel comfortable with q(≧▽≦q)
