Anubis wasn't really a reaper. Yes he would take you to the afterlife but he would test your soul in ways to see if you wore worthy to go to what they thought was there form of heaven. They believed that whatever they wore buried with could help theme which is why pherows had so much. They took everything out of the body accept for the heart because they thought it was the most important part. They also technically thought it was the brain and that the brain did nothing.
