Mochi’s Classroom: Inspiration or Copying ଘ(੭ˊ꒳ˋ)੭✧
Welcome back to my class, Students ⁄(⁄ ⁄•⁄ω⁄•⁄ ⁄)⁄
Today’s topic is about the differences between being inspired and simply copying, mostly pertaining to OCs.
This isn’t a new topic on my page and I’ve had to address this multiple times before, but if you haven’t been here for that, I’ll state it once more.

I DO NOT like people copying my art style or OCs

I guess it’s a little hard for younger viewers in particular to pick out whether something is copying or not, but here are some little tests you can do to ensure you’re not copying an artist because chances are, they don’t appreciate it and it is not a compliment.
1. If you compare your OC to someone else and there are more than 5 features it shares with that other OC, take some off and change it more. (EX: Hair color, ears, clothing style, accessories, face details)
2. If you were to color your OC differently, would it look exactly like someone else’s? If so, change more because that’s basically a recolor and not a new OC.
3. If people point out similarities between your OC and another creator’s often, you’re more than likely not changing things up enough.
4. If you “need” to use another artist’s art as reference to draw your style or a new OC, you’re probably copying.
I saw a particular person commenting about how drama revolving around similarities between OCs is unnecessary and that “nobody cares”, but if you don’t see an issue with copying OCs, I can’t help you.
The fact of the matter is that artists work to create new ideas that others would like and would be unique, and thus, when their hard work is stolen overnight, it doesn’t feel good, especially when it’s an OC or an art style that can take minutes or even years to develop.
I’m not new to people copying me and there are times where I see people copy me and friends of mine and it really frustrates me. Just keep in mind, if you don’t want people to copy you without credit, please do the same for others.
I was supposed to draw a different drawing, but I got distracted with this because this is such a reoccurring problem for my friends and I and it’s annoying when people like this get attention for basically copying your work. (。ŏ_ŏ) Just try to be creative and listen when asked to change your art if you’re copying.
