i want to get this off of my chest, this has been
ridiculously frequent and just makes me question so many
things again. i thought the situation got better, but clearly,
it hasn't. the sexualisation of mena cultures, more
specifically arab cultures, is ridiculous. belly dancer outfits
are seen as just aesthetics, the whole flying carpet / arab
clothes has been overfetishized in games, movies, and
more. niqabs, specifically the part that cover the faces are
seen as edgy and are used for the wrong reasons by white
people. the words بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم are used as
aesthetics. allahuakbar and terrorist jokes are still a thing.
the culture is BEYOND fetishized. BEYOND attacked.
BEYOND stereotyped. the list is too long. the list could go
on forever. , i still
see arabs get attacked. i've rarely seen my mutuals talk
about this except for one or two, one of them being part
arab, and i thank ruu for talking about these issues often as
they make me feel seen. i dont get why or how people pick
and choose things of the culture and then completely
disrespectfully disregard everything else. backhanded
racist weird compliments, fetishization of anything. yes,
arabic is pretty. but could you atleast learn the fucking
meaning about any word you use? could you be interested
in the culture? could you look into the history? the amount
of times people have been so weirded out about school on
sunday and about how fridays sre a part of the weekend. i
wish people looked into why these are a thing. the way
people are shocked when i explain such things, such
simple things, just show that the middle east / arab
countries are always overlooked. it's so rare for someone
to be interested in the culture. and this doesn't only go for
arab cultures, this is for every culture that isn't white.
they're beautiful cultures. the languages are beautiful, the
traditions are wonderful, look into them, please research
these things, it's good to have basic knowledge about
these cultures. dont pick and choose things you like and
go on to fetishize just cause. we're fucking people with
feelings.
