RMS Olympic | Part 1/2 | The Cursed Sister of Titanic (Reupload)

The RMS Olympic and her other Two Famous Sisters was a culmination of a long cycle of an upmanship between The White Star Line and the Cunard Lines and their German Competitors. The White Star Line was at its peak in the early 20th Century and with the Launch of the Big Four which I'll make in the Future. Launched in 1901 and 1906 at that time the Big Four were the Largest and Fastest ships in the World and the most Successful Ships that the White Star Line ever had before they could even launch the last Vessels of the Big Four the RMS Adriatic. The Cunard Lines Launched the RMS Lusitania and would modernize the Atlantic Passenger Trade on June 7th, 1906. The RMS Lusitania was only 7,000 Tons Larger than Adriatic. But Lusitania and her Two Sisters proved to be more Faster than any Companies.
For Decades the White Star Line had opted that they won't pursue Speed Records and knowing how expensive they were and opted for Larger and Luxury ships to gain more profits. But the introduction of the Lusitania made The White Star Line Lose against Both Competitors and something had to be done. Lord Piri the controlling chairman of Harland and Wolff initiated extensive and costly modernization and expansions to the shipyard in 1906 and 1908. Three Shipways are converted into Two Significantly larger once in Preparations for the inevitable respawns to the Cunard. In the Summer of 1907 Bruce Ismay, The Chairman of the Company White Star Line had dinner with Lord Pirrie's Home in London and had Discussed plans for what they call the Big Ship. And They Agreed to set up Three Large Ocean Liners that were purposed for Safety, Luxury, and Economic Operations. These Operations were announced to the Public One Day after Lusitania arrived in New York City. Bruce Ismay took an Active Role in the Project and which would evolve rapidly into a three-funnel a Four Funnel Design. Initial Concepts we're Presented in the White Star Line in July of 1908 and Called for accommodations with a total of 3,104 Passengers onboard including a First Class Smoking Room and a Dining Saloon all tapped by Magnificent Glass Domes. There will be numerous changes to this concept the overall design would be just the same. And on July 31st The White Star Signed the agreement to proceed with the Construction. Despite the ownership of J.P Morgan's international mercantile marine company, the trust did not finance the new Liner, and instead, the White star line took out a series of Commercial Loans to finance the Olympic Trio. This is Different from Cunard Lines the relies on low-interest government loans to finance several of its ships. During this period, the White Star Line was Experiencing unprecedented levels of success with a net profit of Six Million One Hundred Seventy-five Thousand eight hundred and fifty-two pounds from the proceeding ten years. Nearly double the profit of Cunard Lines. In 1907 it saw a 50 percent increase in profits. The white star line was riding high and Bruce Ismay and Lord Pirrie were eager to build a Liner and maintained the company's dominance.

On December 16, 1908, the Keel was laid down in Harland and Wolff's Shipyard 400 Commission labeled Yard Number 400 TSS Olympic. The Next Month the Keel was laid down for yard Number 401 TSS Titanic. The two sisters would be built nearly identical. With 4,000 to 3,000 Workers who would build the RMS Olympic, the details of her design were overseen by Alexander Carlisle until his retirement in 1910 when Thomas Andrews assumed his duties. Technical design was overseen by Andrew's deputy Edward Wilding. The answers of her machinery were not answered until several months into Construction. Quadruple Expansion Reciprocating Engines proved to be very successful for the previous Ships that White Star Line Built including the RMS Oceanic and the Big Four. And The RMS Lusitania's turbine engines were also proved to be successful but while turbines are the latest intervention. Efficiency and Passenger comfort is the number one priority and Lusitania's turbine engines were causing vibration issues and her speed was costly due to Fuel Consumption. With that in mind, the RMS Olympic would split the difference with two triple expansions that would drive her two outer propellers and a low-powered turbine engine powered by the Steam Exhaust that would drive the center propeller. Before committing this configuration the Company tested this on Two Under constructed vessels that we're on the root to Canada the RMS Lorentic and The RMS Megantic. The RMS Megantic was given the conventional reciprocating engines and the RMS Lorentic was given the new combination system. The RMS Lorentic proved to be more dominant over her sister and the combination was confirmed in RMS Olympic on April 20, 1909, just five days after the RMS Laurentic had been delivered. Siemens-Martin Steel was used for RMS Olympic shell plating and upper works. It was considered Battleship steel and proved to be successful on other Older Ships. The RMS Olympic has 16 Watertight Compartments with watertight doors that can be closed manually or from a control panel located on the Bridge she was equipped with 14 Lifeboats, 2 emergency cutters, and 4 collapsible lifeboats more than the regulations required at that time. The RMS Titanic would receive the same arrangement as the original plans that were called for just 14 Lifeboats and 4 Cutters for everyone's expectations this isn't enough for everyone on board but at that time Lifeboats were intended primarily to transfer passengers from one ship to another. It was thought that in an emergency the Wireless Marconi equipment could be used to call our ships on the busy North Atlantic Shipping Lanes and help would arrive before the Ship goes down. The RMS Olympic was launched on October 20th, 1910 the Ship was covered in white to make her stand out and press photos. The event was presented to the thousands and presided over by Lord Piri and she was Christened by nobody because the White Star Line does not even Christen their ships. A Firework was fired at 11 AM as RMS Olympic was released down the slipway to wild cheers and applause at the beautiful sight of the largest moving object ever created sliding.

|The Fate of the Giant|

The RMS Olympic sailed on her first Maiden Voyage on June 14, 1911, and the Captain of the ship was infamous Captain J Edward Smith the commodore of the White Star Line. Thomas Andrews, Bruce Ismay, and Harland & Wolff guarantee group were on board to experience the issues of the New Ship. The RMS Titanic was launched a few days later on May 31st, 1911. The Voyage proved to be successful earning the RMS Olympic worldwide acclaim. The Ships first Eight crossings would prove to demonstrate her popularity with passengers and the potential for profit for the potential of her career. But then on September 20, 1911, The RMS Olympic collided with the British Cruiser HMS Hawke on the Solent her size and turning radius took the Crew of HMS Hawke by surprise, and RMS Olympic's Large Propellers stuck the smaller HMS Hawke into her side. The Collision flooded two of the RMS Olympic's Watertight Compartments but no one was injured in the Collision despite the damage, the RMS Olympic was able to return to Southampton on her Own. To return RMS Olympic to service as quickly as possible the propeller shaft intended for the RMS Titanic was used to replace the damage in the Collision delaying RMS Titanic Completion. The Ship was repaired in only 6 Weeks and the RMS Olympic was able to return to service in November of that year. On March 30th, 1912 Captain Smith left the RMS Olympic to take command of her Sister. And she was replaced by Captain Herbert James Haddock throughout his career he Captained several White Star Liners including the RMS Titanic (No Joke I did just research and found out about it) for a brief period before she was delivered to Southampton for her maiden voyage and turned the ship over to Captain Edward Smith. On April 13, 1912, The RMS Olympic left New York City for a routine Eastbound crossing, and the next 48 Hours would forever change the Ships Career. After Receiving RMS Titanic's distress signals at 12:45 AM the RMS Olympic sailed Full Speed towards the Scene of the unfolding tragedy for over 500 Nautical Miles (926 KM) away although Captain Haddock of the RMS Olympic responded quickly to the situation lighting all possible boilers to maximizing the RMS Olympic's Speed there was still considerable confusion onboard about what was going on. After RMS Titanic told RMS Olympic to ready her boats and asked about the ship's location the RMS Olympic responded if the RMS Titanic was Speeding south to meet them. The Urgency of the Situation becomes immediately clear when RMS Titanic responded by saying that they were putting passengers off in small boats. Soon the RMS Titanic's distinctive signal went silent but the RMS Olympic kept trying to contact her sister all night. By Mid-Morning Passengers began piecing together fragments of what happened. All Concerts we're Cancelled to sign Respect and soon Passengers began raising Money for the surviving Passengers on the Tragedy. Collecting over Seven Thousand Dollars. Almost 14 Hours after Receiving the RMS Titanic's Distress Calls and 100 Nautical Miles of the Disasters the RMS Olympic received a Message from Captain Arthur Rostron of the RMS Carpathia that all survivors have been taken aboard and there was nothing more than the RMS Olympic could do to help. When RMS Olympic was offered to take on some Survivors Captain Haddock declined to fear that the sight of RMS Titanic's Identical Sister would only Traumatize her survivors. Instead, the RMS Olympic resumed her course and helped relay the lists of survivors to New York. The RMS Olympic finally arrived at Southampton on April 21st, 1912 at 2 AM Captain Haddock was extremely exhausted from that experience but in the coming days and months the trauma was still felt by the rest of RMS Olympic's Crew would soon turn into outrage.
