AHS Centaur | Australian Hospital Ship Centaur | Tribute
4:10 AM on May 14, 1943. AHS Centaur was on her sailing from Sydney to Port Moresby, AHS Centaur was Torpedoed by a Japanese Submarine. The Torpedo struck on AHS Centaur's Port Side (Left) Oil Fuel Tank, and approximately two meters below the waterline, creating an eight to ten-meter hole, igniting the fuel, and setting the ship on fire while it was moving, Many onboard were immediately killed by the concussion or burned to death.
The AHS Centaur Capsized/ Flipped on her Port Side (Left) sinking bow first. Lifeboats we're unable to launch because of AHS Centaur's sinking. At that time of the attack, most of the crew and passengers were asleep and has little chance of escape.
The AHS Centaur would sink in under 3 minutes
There were only 64 Survivors of over 334 Souls on board.
AHS Centaur's sinking is one of the most unrecognized and if not an Unknown sinking.
Condolences to the People who have died in this horrifying Tragedy.
There was speculation that the Japanese Officer on the Submarine ignored the rules of war and straight-up ordered to torpedo the Hospital Ship. He wants glory for himself. He ended up executed after the War.
