Major General Sir George Pomeroy Colley (First Boer War)

Born on November 1, 1833, He was a very well-educated young lad and was the third and youngest son of the family. He studied at the Royal Military College and went through good conduct in examinations and was being transferred at the age of 16 to the Queen's foot regiment.

George P. Colley was an excellent artist of watercolors and spent much of his time sketching in Normandy, Spain, and other places. His habits were to wake up early and study 2 hours before breakfast. He learned Russian and studied chemistry and political economy.

In early 1875, he went to the Kingdom of Ashanti in Africa with Sir Garnet Wolsey to discuss the materials in the region. And Lord Lytton was appointed Viceroy in India, in early 1876, he appointed Colley as his Military Secretary Colley influenced the events which led to the Occupation of Kabul and the Treaty of Gandamak.

George Colley, who had received the distinctions of Companion of the Order of the Bath and Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George, was created Knight Commander of the Order of the Star of India in recognition of his official services in India.

“Second Anglo-Afghan War”

George Colley played a significant role in the Anglo-Afghan War as a Military Secretary and then as the Governor-General of India. After the War Colley returned to Africa.

“First Boer War”

On April 24, 1880, George Colley was appointed with the rank of Major-General and invaded The Boer Republic with 1,400 Troops and met the Boers at the Battle of Laing's Nek. He Ordered His Men an Assault on Laing's Nek with the Support of Artillery and Cavalry but was lost because of the Boer's Fierce Firepower.

Battle of Majuba (Last Battle of Colley)

After the Defeat of Laing's Nek, Major General George Colley set up a Defense over the Hill, with over 400 Troops from the Naval Brigade, The Highland Gordons, and Regular Infantry facing the Boer's 500. He was Confident in his Position, and When the Boers began to reach on top of the Hill, Colley was in the Center of the Fighting trying desperately to encourage his men to renew the Attack but his Men were in a Disorderly Rout. Colley was shot dead by a rifle bullet through the forehead and died at the Battle.
