HMHS Britannic | “The Construction” | Part 1
In September 1907, a New Ocean Liner RMS Lusitania has sailed for her Maiden Voyage declaring her the Largest and Fastest Ship in the World. Bruce Ismay the Director of White Star Line and Lord Pirri Chairman of the Harland & Wolff Shipyard had decided to Start a Construction of Three Massive Ocean Liners which would overshadow the RMS Lusitania in Size and Luxury. In Early 1908 Thomas Andrews presented the Design of the Ocean Liner to White Star Line labeled Plan D this design would lay the groundwork for what would become the Infamous RMS Olympic Class. The Names we're decided on randomly around this time with the leading Ocean Liner RMS Olympic starting Construction in December 1908 and RMS Titanic starting Construction in March 1909 and RMS Britannic Starting construction in November 1911. It was rumored that the original name was going to be RMS Gigantic although this was later disproved by Harland & Wolff saying how the name ‘Gigantic’ was only ever used when describing the Ocean Liners Width. Tom McCloskey an Archive Manager of Harland & Wolff noted how he never saw any references to the name being used as the Third Ocean Liner in the Trios. Who knows tho maybe that was just suggested and I highly doubt it. In Belfast, Ireland On November 11, 1911, the First pieces of HMHS Britannic were placed. Shortly before its Construction, it was believed that RMS Britannic would have very similar designs to RMS Titanic and RMS Olympic. When the RMS Titanic Disaster on April 15, 1912, it was very clear that Modifications would be added to the RMS Britannic. Unlike RMS Olympic these changes would occur before the Ocean Liner was launched. Which gave the Ocean Liner more sovereignty in terms of what could be seriously altered. Some of these changes include raising the Ocean Liner's Watertight Bulkheads towards B Deck to allow a double hull along with the Engine room and Boiler Room and an Upgraded Center Turbine Engine which had 2,000 more horsepower. Many of these changes were a direct response to the RMS Titanic's Sinking. One of the Biggest changes tho was the Ocean Liner's Watertight Compartments. Previously the Ocean Liner could stay afloat with up to Four Watertight Compartments flooded. But because RMS Titanic had hit and flooded one more Water Compartment and that's more than the Ocean Liner can Handle. Which led to the Water overflowing the bulkheads. The Central Compartment was Strengthened allowing for up to Six Watertight Compartments to be flooded before the Water Pumps we're overwhelmed. Additionally, before the ship was launched she would be refitted with Large Davits powered by an Electric Motor capable of Launching Six Lifeboats. The RMS Britannic was Originally going to have Eight of those Massive Davits but only Five were installed before RMS Britannic Rushed into service. After many Structural Changes and Delays, RMS Britannic was launched on February 26, 1914. Throughout the next few Months, RMS Britannic would be refitted going into Dry Dock where the Ocean Liner's Propellers we're positioned. Before the RMS Britannic could even be finished Construction would be slowed as increasing Tensions between Great Britain and Germany would eventually cause Britain to join the War against Germany.
