MV Britannic | “Great Momentum” | Part 2
While the new RMMV Oceanic was designed to make a statement, the motor vessel being constructed nearby on shipyard number one was designed to be economical. Along with her planned identical vessel, this Vessel would have two propellers each powered by a five-cylinder four-stroke double-acting diesel engine. Given the vessel speed of 17.5 knots. This speed was far from fast but this slowed the journey and it allowed the vessel to lower tariffs and significantly greater fuel efficiency.
The MV Britannic was launched on August 6, 1929, but only a couple of months later the wall street crash of 1929 ushered in the Great Depression. Despite the downturn, the construction of the vessel continued. But the RMMV Oceanic project already delayed by changes to her complex propulsion systems was halted, due to the financial difficulties of Lord Kilson's Shipping Company. An appeal was made to the British Government for support, but the request was denied and the project was canceled. The Unfinished Vessel we're repurposed for MV Britannic's twin sister ship the MV Georgic and the construction of the vessel began in July 1929. MV Britannic's Sea Trials began in May 1930 she weigh about 24,943 tons and was 683.6 feet in length and with a beam of 82.4 feet. The Vessel was designed as a Cabin Class Ocean Liner an informal term for Ocean Liners that we're designed to offer comfort and luxury at affordable rates. The Ships configuration could accommodate 504 Cabin Class Passengers, 551 Tourist Class Passengers, and 498 Third Class Passengers. And when the Ship is completed MV Britannic would be Britain's Largest Motor Vessel in service and the Second Largest in the World after the completion of an Italian Vessel. The MV Britannic was equipped with two wide funnels to complement the vessel's exterior design which combined with classic styling and modernity. The Vessel's forward funnel was false and ironically was to be used as a smoking room for Deck and Engineering Officers. The Ship has a Classic and Sharp Bow and a Modern Cruiser Stern that we still use to this day. While the MV Britannic was designed to offer at an Affordable Rate. The Vessel was designed with Luxurious Accommodations that could easily compete with other Ocean Liners.
The MV Britannic sailed for her Maiden Voyage on June 28, 1930, for that Year it would be an Absolute Catastrophe for White Star Line which recorded its first Deficit in its Company's History. In an attempt to remedy dire the Situation many older Vessels were sold, Still, MV Britannic entering into Transatlantic Service proved to be a Perfect Moment for the Financial Times of the White Star Line. The People Adored the MV Britannic because it's Affordable, Modern, and Attractive. By reducing travel costs the White Star Line was able to offer reduced rates for every travel that didn't feel cheap. MV Britannic Along with the MV Georgic the Ocean Liners generated significant profit for the Struggling White Star Line.
