MV Britannic | “The Golden Years of White Star Line's Last Vessel” | Part 5

In 1949, The White Star Line was finally laid down and ceased to Exist when Cunard Lines purchased the Company and Dropped its Name off the Company. And Starting in 1950, The Company would be simply known as the ‘Cunard Line’ despite the Change, both MV Britannic and MV Georgic continued to sail with Both White Star Line's Flag and Cunard Lines Flag. And maintain the White Star Line's Existence the MV Britannic was extensively Refitted after the War, These refits were a perfect opportunity to make major improvements and modernize the Popular Vessel. The Progress was slowed down due to the War's Material Shortages and cost 1 Million Pounds to Complete the Refit. The Vessel re-entered service on May 22, 1948, as a Transatlantic Vessel. The MV Britannic was welcomed with a Traditional Water Salute. The MV Britannic's Post-War Career was much more successful than the Pre-war Voyages. The Vessel was at 80% of the Vessels Capacity on Most Voyages and even reached 92% Capacity on Some Voyages. The Post-war years of the late 1940s through the early 1950s generated significant profits for Cunard Line and this represents the last Golden Age of Oceanliners. But in the 1950s signs of Travel begin to emerge for Cunard Line, as Air Travel took hold at the end of the decade. Despite all of this the MV Britannic remained popular with the Public. MV Britannic's Voyages remained Uneventful but did suffer a headlong Collision with an American Cargo Ship. In 1953 and 1955 the MV Britannic suffered minor Fires though neither incident result in any major damage or injury to the Vessel. The MV Georgic did not experience the same level of Experienced as the MV Britannic. The Damage to the Vessel meant that the MV Georgic was not fully restored to a pre-war luxury. And was used as a Utilitarian immigration ship. The MV Georgic was used as a Troopship during the Korean War and was Finally withdrawn from Service in 1955. Leaving MV Britannic as the Last Oceanliner to sail under White Star Line. The Once dominant Company was now reduced to a single moderately-sized Ocean Liner. In 1960, the Vessel published its 1961 Voyages but this Voyage would never happen. On May 9, 1960, a Crack was found in one of the Vessels Engines. The MV Britannic was forced to remain in New York until Repairs could be made in July costing the Company 40,000 Dollars in repairs and causing the Vessel to Delay Four More of its Voyages. while the MV Britannic was beginning to return to its service it was later soon announced that it would sail its final Voyage with Cunard Line in December of 1960. MV Britannic left New York for the Last Time on November 25, 1960, Arrived at Liverpool on December 3rd, and only a Few Weeks Later. The Final Vessel of the White Star Line was scrapped.
