‘Lost Battalion’

The Lost Battalion was the name given to nine companies of the US 77th Division, a total of 554 Men isolated by German forces near the end of WWI.

They were led by Major Charles W. Whittlesey and on October 2, The American Forces attacked the German Occupied Argonne with French Support on the Left Flank and American Forces on the Right. But the French & American Forces on their Flanks were stalled and found themselves surrounded by German Forces. The American Forces fought Desperately and Fiercely refusing to Surrender and were suffering Heavy Casualties themselves in the Encirclement. The Battalion was Low on Ammunition, Food, and Water and was being Bombarded by Their Artillery. They tried Several Attempts to send Messages but all of the Runners were being shot or captured by the Germans. But The Battalion was Saved by a Pigeon who was carrying a Message. The Pigeon was being shot by the Germans but manage to Escape with minimal wounds.

In that Note it read
‘We are along the road paralell 276.4. our artillery is dropping a barrage directly on us. For heavens sake stop it.’

Despite the Situation, The Battalion Held their Ground and managed to Escape the Encirclement.
