SS America | “They F*cked Up” | Flagship of America (4/5)

Usually, when a Cruise Line Company purchases an Older Vessel they invest time and money in a refit to bring her to the latest designs but not Venture Lines who bought The SS America from the Chandris Lines in 1978.

The American Company owned by a group of travel agents purchased the vessel with plans to offer cruises from New York City to... Nowhere. The idea was to offer a luxurious break from sweltering New York City's summer which in theory isn't a terrible idea and 1970s New York was a bit messy, their inexperienced owners invested 2 Million dollars in repairs on the ship but the nearly 40-Year-Old Ocean Liner required significantly more work to bring the vessel into shape. But rather than delay the First Cruise the group heavily marketed the vessel and changed its name back to ‘America’ to capitalize on its Vessel's History and promised a Glamorous two-day cruise to nowhere for 99 Dollars, its first cruise was scheduled for June 30, 1978, and well it was Something.

As passengers boarded the vessel they were horrified by the condition of the Ship. Faulty Plumbing caused water stains all over the Ship and flooded many cabins. Bed lacked sheets and some didn't even have mattresses one person quoted

‘Nobody is staying here, passengers complaining of the interiors onboard which I don't think was properly handled and the cabins have leaks, cracks, and beds with stains on them, toilets clog up whenever you use them I tell you to not stay here.’

The Company screwed up the tickets of the ship leaving many passengers without assigned cabins and they were left
to aimlessly traverse the halls of the ship guided by the hordes of cockroaches and rats as the Ship sailed passed the Statue of Liberty. Hundreds begun heading to the Purser's office and began chanting
‘We want to get off’ and conditions only to deteriorate from there as some passengers getting into fights with Crew Members demanding to be allowed to get out of the disgusting vessel and they were eventually forced to return back to the pier and unloading 960 Passengers. The company again attempted to cruise again later that day but those passengers refused and left, the Vessel was forced to drop anchor near Coney Island where the ships shell doors were opened and people desperately clamored down rope ladders to awaiting tug boats that ferry the 200 Traumatized Passengers to the only slightly better Staten Island after the nightmare, Crews made headlines about the Venture Cruises bravely admitted that they had “Goofed” and offered another 5 Day Cruise to Nova Scotia a slight improvement over nowhere and this time the vessel manage to get out New York Harbour but when the vessel encountered heavy waves, a water fractured and back up her toilet waters and flooded. Venture Cruises again admitted that they have “Goofed” and promised on the next cruise “You will see a ship full of happy people onboard a great lady named the SS America.” (sound promising) by now Authorities had intervene to prevent future hell cruises and later charged the Company with Deceptive Advertising and Buisness Practices and after an inspection of the US Public Health Services the Ship was given an 6/100 with mounting fines and cancelled bookings Venture Cruises was filed for Bankruptcy without any single Successful Voyage and the SS America was laid up for Auction and sold for one-fifth of what venture had paid for it.
