SS America | ‘An Ending that had a Potential..’ | Flagship of America (5/5)
Recognizing a Interesting Deal the SS America was actually purchased again by the Chandris Lines and renamed the Vessel into SS Italis and begin performing necessary repairs and we're forced to remove the forward funnel which had been corroded to the point where it could not be saved, the quick fix of the ship was a slightly awkward profile and offered cruises to the Eastern Mediterranian but her second time with the Chandris Lines was a short one although they have restored the ship to an acceptable condition the Vessel has become slowly neglecting through the years and was in a dire need of a major investment if the vessel wanted to stay competitive in the now popular cruise industry but, Chandris Lines was not ready to make a necessary investment and the ship was laid up and sold in 1980 and for the next decade and a half the SS America's future slowly become uncertain as she was brought several times for a number of different purposes and there was even plans to convert the vessel into a prison ship at one point for a brief period the Vessel was named the SS Noga and then the SS Alfredos although they didn't finish adding the new name to her hull so technically the port bow was ‘Alfredos’ and the Stern and starboard are the ‘Noga’ in the late 1980s she was sold for scrapped but when their buyer defaulted on their payment. The SS America's fate again lefted in a limbo..
Finally in October of 1992 a buyer stepped in and intended to make the SS America into a Floating Hotel in Thailand an Analysis of her hull was made and the results was surprisingly in good condition and was renamed for the last time SS American Star. The Vessel's Propellers we're removed and preparations were set to transport the vessel to Thailand, after a failed attempt few days earlier SS American Star lefted Greece undertowed by a Ukranian Tug on December 31st, 1993. The Challenging Trip was going to last about a 100 Days but not long onto the Voyage they encountered an Violent storm that snapped their cables sending the unpowered Vessel adrift, Crews onboard the SS American Star attempted to reattach the vessel but was proven unsuccessful and the crew had to be rescued by a Helicopter.
The SS American Star was abandoned and lefted to adrift until the vessel was founded on the Canary Islands stuck by a sandbar on January 18, 1994. The Vessel was immediately pounded by Heavy Hurricane Waves on her Port Side (Left) any hope of salvage was lost when the SS American Star had split in two. And the SS American Star was declared on July 6, 1994 a lost.
The Wreck of the SS American Star would remain a Bizzare and a great opportunity to locals who try to get a picture or take anything valuable onboard. The Stern part of the Section had collapsed in 1996 leaving the Bow Section up right until it too collapsed on 2005 it was a sad moment to see once the Pride of America ending up beached and slowly disappearing beneath the waves.
