despite Jean's attempts to show empathy and become a better person, the way he treats Theo ultimately causes Theo to devalue himself and doubt how much self worth he has. The feeling Jean provides is great, Jean isn't "abusive", but the fact that Jean has so much trouble with empathy and emotion leaves the relationship lacking. Theo constantly yearns for something that Jean can not provide, while Jean thrives off of the attention and worship Theo gives him.
