Drawing LEGO Ninjago’s Main 6, pt. 1 - Jay

Ayup everyone, I started rewatching ninjago this month and have been cooking up some very basic designs that I wanted to draw, so I figured why not do the guy that I first started thinking of a proper design for? Also it’s freakin’ hilarious that Jay’s name is a pun, Jay Walker is NOT looking both ways before crossing.

My immediate thought when starting with designs was “tall skinny dude with the freckles”, but then I actually thought about Jay as a character five seconds longer and decided to scrap it and save it for someone else. In the meantime, I decided I’d be going for cartoonish designs, and knew it was gonna be a doozy trying to give all the ninja distinct outlines that still matched each other.

With that in mind, I then figured Jay to be the shortest of all the ninja (idk if they have canon heights but this pasty white boy is SHORT- yeah also idk mans is white all the way-), and decided he’d have more of a “rounded triangle” sort of body type, with most of his weight being at his waist line.

For a while, I considered giving him a sort of “poncho-like” second layer (Idk what it’s called, feel free to lmk), but then decided that it would cover the rest of his silhouette to much and that it would work just as well if not better for a different ninja. I didn’t want to abandon the idea entirely though, and figured “heck it, he’ll still have the poncho thing, but he’ll wear it so its wrapped over his neck and draped over one of his shoulders”, which, idrk how to draw twisted fabric (cause he did one of the ♾️ things that you do with hair ties but left a loop over his shoulder), but I think I illustrated it well enough.

Anyways yeah, those were most of the major points with designing Jay, I have literally no idea when I’ll start actually getting my thoughts out on paper/tablet for the other ninja, but I do got them ideas. I might go back to your average minecraft-posting in between, who knows.
