KYOTO SEEKER, CHAPTER 2
Chuuni sighed loudly. He was confident this wasn’t going to work, given that he had stayed up past one o’clock trying to meditate. Yukitarou had only given him asleep methods, because apparently “in his experience, they work better.” But he didn’t know that Chuuni had insomnia and it was difficult for him to fall asleep, much less on purpose like the methods said to do. On top of that, his mind always raced with anxiety and paranoia during the night, so it was hard to meditate and clear his head.
“Damn… I should just give up already. It’s clear that I’m not getting anywhere. Maybe I should just…”
His eyes suddenly but slowly began to close on their own. This level of tranquility and calmness was not something Chuuni ever experienced often. If anything, it was probably just his body forcing him to get a singular wink of sleep, but it felt wonderful nonetheless.
“Nevermind. What if I just practice one of the methods right now..” He thought to himself, meditating in a starfish position in his dark room with the moonlight from his window shining on his face. He didn’t even realize when or how he fell into a nice, deep sleep…
“Chuuni!! I got my Psychos to look all over the place for you. Huh, never figured you were the type to hang out in a library…” A familiar voice exclaimed at him. When Chuuni opened his eyes, he saw none other than… the Psychic!! But he looked different. He was recognizable, but different. Must’ve been the clothes.
“Wait… Psychic?” Chuuni asked, still half asleep.
“He’s not sure if it’s me? Maybe I need to adapt my DR outfit to look more like that of my school one.” The Psychic’s voice was heard, but his lips moved not.
Chuuni just figured he was good at ventriloquism or something and replied, “No, it’s cool, I recognized you well enough.” To this the Psychic’s eyes widened.
“You were able to hear me just now?” He asked.
Chuuni was even more confused now. “Uhh… yeah? Weren’t you doing ventriloquism?”
“Haha, no, Chuuni! Okay, so let me explain like this. You know how I’m the Psychic, right? That means I can read other people’s thoughts.”
“No duh. That much was obvious.”
“Shh, don’t interrupt! You just read my thoughts about changing my outfit, so that means you’re a Psychic, as well. I don’t know how, but-“
“Why is my life like this!” Chuuni bent down, pretending to sob. Well, the Psychic thought he was pretending at least…until he saw the actual tears.
“..Chuuni? What’s wrong? Isn’t it great that you’re a Psychic? If you ask me, you’re way more powerful and definitely way cooler than the boring old Seeker.” The first Psychic tried to comfort, but it only upset Chuuni further.
“No.. I… I need to be a hero, I-“ He hiccuped. “The Seeker isn’t boring, he’s- He’s really cool… And he does good in the world. I don’t wanna be a Psychic. Doesn’t this mean I’ve given up and teamed with the villains..?”
“Hey, now. I don’t appreciate being called a villain. We’re not all that horrible, you know. Besides, isn’t it kinda cool that you get to be the Psychic Sidekick?”
“I’m only a sidekick, too?!” Chuuni yelled. “Please, I want to go back now…”
“Well, yeah. To become the real Psychic, you’d have to kill me.” The Psychic said, relaxed.
“Then is the same true for the Seeker?” Chuuni asked desperately. “If… hypothetically, if.. I were to, kill the Seeker.. Would I then become the Seeker?”
That’s exactly what he wanted him to realize. But it’s not like he could just say “yeah, go ahead, kill that boy!” So he had to act as if he was disappointed that he found out.
“Yeah.. That’s right. If you kill the Seeker, you become the Seeker.” He paused. “But doesn’t that sound more villainous than just being content as a Psychic?”
“You don’t understand. My parents got divorced when I was seven, and my only way of coping since then has been to think I was a hero in an imaginary world that turned out not to be so imaginary after all… So to figure out I’m a villain in my own world is just about the worst possible thing that could’ve ever happened to me.” Chuuni explained, slightly dried tears staining his cheeks.
“Hoo boy,” The Psychic thought to himself, forgetting that Chuuni could hear him.
“Hey, what’re you ‘Hoo boy’-ing about?! I vent to you and THESE are your thoughts!?” Chuuni asked angrily while the Psychic could only laugh, thinking he was joking.
“I’m serious!” He looked at him with so much determination and anger in his eyes. The only way to put it would be a fire in his eyes in every meaning of the word.
“Whatever,” the Psychic said bluntly, not liking the feeling of guilt. “I don’t care. You have three options now. Kill the Seeker, and become enemy of the Psi. Kill me, and become enemy of the Oculi. Or kill no one and pretend to be in a neutral party, when really there is none and you’d have to be enemy of both sides. Choose.”
“That’s a trick question,” said Chuuni suddenly.
“…So you realized. Technically, I didn’t lie, but I left some information out,” the higher-up admitted. “If you kill the Seeker, you’ll be enemy of both sides until you can manage to do so. After that, you’ll be the enemy of the Psi. But if you choose to kill me, then you’ll be the enemy of both sides, again, until you manage to do so. Fair warning, though, that the Psi will be far more brutal in our punishments if you’re caught.” He paused. “But to be perfectly honest… I don’t wanna do that to you. Make this easy on both of us, hm?” He was silently praying to every god out there that Chuuni would choose the first, and…
Chuuni looked at his feet. “Sorry. But I don’t know what to do if I’m not a hero. I’ll go the hard route if it means doing good rather than doing evil.”
The Psychic sighed, keeping up the act. “This is why you’re so dumb, Chuuni!” He said lightheartedly. “Alright, I can respect that and your dramatic backstory. Go ahead, kill the Seeker. Instead of targeting you, I’ll help you, since we now have a common enemy. That’s not to say the other Psi won’t target you, since I won’t give them any orders on the matter, so look out for that.”
Chuuni nodded determinedly. “Thanks. This is gonna be a lot easier than if I were to do this all by myself.”
“Oh, you think we’re done here, then?” The Psychic asked.
“Aren’t we?”
“Of course not! I’m giving you a sub-mission now to identify who the Seeker is in the OR,” said the Psychic.
“No way… you can’t mean you want me to kill him in that reality? Dude, face the reality that jail exists over there and I’d get arrested for sure! Not to mention that’s really messed up!” Chuuni said.
“Okay, first of all, way to jump to conclusions. Second of all, it’s not like it’s any less messed up to do that here? All I was gonna ask of you is to get close to him in the OR. That way, when he sees you in the DR, neither he nor his lackeys will target you,” the Psychic clarified.
“Uh, how are your subordinates any different from those ‘lackeys’?” Chuuni thought before realizing it was not silent to the Psychic and looked away, embarrassed.
“I suppose it’s just a matter of terms.” The Psychic shrugged. “Anyway, that’s besides the point. Figure out who the Seeker is, and your mission of killing him is both halfway done, AND much easier. Assuming you successfully get him to like and trust you, that is.”
“What if he goes after me before I can do that?” Chuuni asked.
“Then your mission’s just that much harder. Obviously, that doesn’t make it impossible.”
Chuuni sat in thought for a moment, processing all the new information. “Do you know… where I should start?”
“I think I have an idea.”
