The Mass that was used by the Catholic Church

The Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite, also known as Traditional Latin Mass, Tridentine Mass, Usus Antiqiuor, or Roman Rite Mass, has been the only form of worship of the Roman Catholic Church prior to the introduction of the Mass of Pope Paul VI (Ordinary Form) in 1969.

The Tridentine Mass, while it has developed organically over the 2000-year history of the Church, is essentially the Mass that was given to the Apostles and the Church by Our Lord Jesus Christ Himself. Although various rites emerged, they all maintained the same spirit imparted to the liturgy by Our Lord and were only adapted to various cultures without any deviation in doctrine.

The Second Vatican Council NEVER called for an abrogation of the Tridentine Mass, unlike what Radical Traditionalists claim; rather, it sought to preserve and promote it. The use of Latin, and the Gregorian Chants are to be preserved in the Latin rites. Those who were still attached to the older form were mostly criticized if not neglected, that’s why Pope St. John Paul II wrote to the bishops urging them to respect the people who are attached to the old liturgy, reminding that this ‘one language’ was an expression of unity of the Church.

However, it was Pope Benedict XVI who made a historic and pivotal movement towards the celebration according to the older liturgy. In his Motu Propio, Summorum Pontificum, he granted a greater freedom to the Catholic faithful who wishes to celebrate the Traditional Latin Mass. He referred the Mass of Pope Paul VI as the ‘Ordinary Form’, and the Roman Missal by Pope St. John XXIII in 1962 as the ‘Extraordinary Form’. It was his way to reconcile the Church with its past.

And since then, the Church has seen a very significant increase of celebrations of the Extraordinary Form. Surprisingly, there’s this phenomenon among young or Millennial Catholics wanting the restoration of the sacred liturgy and return to the Traditional Latin Mass.

We’ll now try to explain, as simple as possible, the Extraordinary Form. Hopefully you’ll discover why many love this ancient form.
