I installed ChromeOS Flex on my 2014 Lenovo IdeaPad and turned it into a Chromebook
Alright, to begin all this, the reason why I did that is because the laptop is SLOW on Windows and I need a fast workspace to do my crappy stuff. It is also MY ONLY laptop I can use until I can get another one that's better.
For short context, ChromeOS Flex is basically, in 4 words: "Google's solution to e-waste". It's a version of ChromeOS that is cloud oriented, Without the play store and android features bogged into it. It is mostly targeted at old hardware like your smart toaster that runs Windows 7.
To start the installation process, I brought the trusty USB drive no one uses in my household, downloaded an image (.bin) file from Google's ChromeOS Flex website and flashed it into the USB with a tool called "Chromebook Recovery Utility" very creative name, I know. After getting the laptop boot from the USB I decided to try the os directly from it before actually nuking my almost-useless hard drive with Google's DNA. The install was pretty straightforward, just click appropriate buttons a few times and COSF is installed in a matter of 3 minutes. It's now a Chromebook by my hands' actions. It's also more faster and snappier, hence the lightweight cloud apps and overall RAM usage. It's now good for web-browsing.
It can be bit mind crushing to switch from Windows to any other operating system especially if you've used it for almost your living but since the fact my laptop is struggling as a tortoise and given by my father I have to find ways to actually boost it outside of the funny windows optimizations. If you happen to be that one person having some bad laptops loaded into your shelf, it would be a good idea to look up a good tutorial how to install another operating system like this and make them breathe new life.
That's all I got to say.
