FYI in Pokémon abilities is a feature added in gen 3, a ability can NOT be used whenever it either does something at the beginning of a battle, or when something specific happens each ability is (mostly) different.
And abilities can only be used once if they are at the beginning of the match unless you switch out and back in or if the enemy brings in another Pokémon.
