This is obviously based off of a toy building kit like for a model airplane! From a bit of research, I have found that they were created in 1936, so anything 1935 and lower is a no-go.
They got popular in the 40s with WWII designs and gained their most popularity through the 50s and into the 60s. So 1967, that’s my guess.

One of my favorite scenes from any movie is in the first sonic movie where sonic says the phrase ‘I hate mushrooms’ referencing SEGA’s rivalry with Nintendo (And by extension, Mario and Sonic) back in the Genesis and SNES days.
