“Oh Israel”
1” When Israel was a child, I loved him,
and out of Egypt I called my son.
2 Israel called to the Egyptians
even as Israel was leaving them.
They kept sacrificing to the Baals
and burning offerings to idols.
3 It was I who taught Ephraim to walk,
taking them by the hand,
but they never knew that I healed them.
4 I led them with human cords,
with ropes of love.
To them I was like one
who eases the yoke from their jaws;
I bent down to give them food.
5 Israel will not return to the land of Egypt
and Assyria will be his king,
because they refused to repent.
6 A sword will whirl through his cities;
it will destroy and devour the bars of his gates,
because of their schemes.
7 My people are bent on turning from me.
Though they call to him on high,
he will not exalt them at all.
8 How can I give you up, Ephraim?
How can I surrender you, Israel?
How can I make you like Admah?
How can I treat you like Zeboiim?
I have had a change of heart;
my compassion is stirred!
9 I will not vent the full fury of my anger;
I will not turn back to destroy Ephraim.
For I am God and not man,
the Holy One among you;
I will not come in rage.
10 They will follow the Lord;
he will roar like a lion.
When he roars,
his children will come trembling from the west.
11 They will be roused like birds from Egypt
and like doves from the land of Assyria.
Then I will settle them in their homes.
This is the Lord’s declaration.
12 Ephraim surrounds me with lies,
the house of Israel, with deceit.
Judah still wanders with God
and is faithful to the holy ones.”
Hosea 11:1-12
Christian Standard Bible
The story of Hosea is not often known amongst those who do not read the Bible. It is a story of a man commanded to marry an unfaithful woman. See, but this command has a purpose. Hosea’s relationship with his wife is meant to resemble God’s relationship with His children, first the Jews, now the gentiles as well. Hosea’s wife constantly cheats on him, going off and lying with other men. As she does this Hosea, her husband, obviously rebukes her. He threatens to take away her grain, wine, and jewels. He threatens to cut her from festivals and sabbaths and feasts. This makes sense, she threw their life away. However, as you read the second half of chapter two, after the declaration of judgment and rebuking, you find something quite peculiar. What we find is forgiveness. We see that Hosea does not take her grain, or wine, or jewels. Instead, Hosea will grant her forgiveness and speak tenderly to her. Not only that, but he will buy her back. Hosea’s wife had become a slave, she was a slave to a man just as we are a slave to sin. Hosea, like God, didn’t leave her, but bought her out of slavery. Even though she sinned, even though she cheated, his endless love for her prevailed. Brothers, sisters, this is exactly what God has done for us. He bought us back from sin. He bought us out of slavery. Jesus paid the fine, he broke the chains. It is because God loves you and he will keep you from harm. You are a child of God. Now, you may say, “why then, is Israel in the animation and not the cross?” Well I tell you that our God is the same in the New Testament as He was in the Old. God has never forgotten a covenant with His people. The Jews are still his people. They are still the apple of his eye. It states this in the old testament.
8 “For the Lord of Armies says this: ‘In pursuit of his glory, he sent me against the nations plundering you, for whoever touches you touches the pupil of my eye.’” Zechariah 2:8 Christian Standard Bible
Then, in the New Testament, it goes to state that He has not forgotten His covenant with the Jews.
“4 And I heard the number of the sealed: 144,000 sealed from every tribe of the Israelites: 5 12,000 sealed from the tribe of Judah, 12,000 from the tribe of Reuben, 12,000 from the tribe of Gad,
6 12,000 from the tribe of Asher, 12,000 from the tribe of Naphtali, 12,000 from the tribe of Manasseh,
7 12,000 from the tribe of Simeon, 12,000 from the tribe of Levi, 12,000 from the tribe of Issachar,
8 12,000 from the tribe of Zebulun, 12,000 from the tribe of Joseph, 12,000 sealed from the tribe of Benjamin.”
Revelation 7:4-8
Christian Standard Bible
God has remembered the Jews His people, He will take 12,000 from each tribe. Now why is this important? Because anyone who wages war on Israel, wages war on God. Anyone who touches Israel touches God’s pupil. If someone poked your eye intentionally, you’d be pretty upset. So why, why does Hamas and therefore Palestine play this game? What do they have to win? They will be obliterated and scattered throughout the Earth. The nation will be removed from the face of the planet. God doesn't forget about His people, He didn’t forget Israel.
