She knew something was going on when she woke. Lily didn't have any idea what time it was, even though her clock said it was 2:08 in the morning. She was easily paranoid at stuff like this. The way she knew something was up was that she never woke up before she was supposed to. Lily would go to bed, fall asleep from 10:00 to 6:00, get ready, and go to school. But not tonight. She got up, feeling as if her senses with heightened somehow. Throwing aside the covers, she walked to her door. The carpet ground creaked with every step. She pressed her ear against the door and listened. There was a sound downstairs, like the sound of someone tapping their fingers on a desk, something she did very often in school.She opened her door and crept downstairs. The noise stopped. Could whatever was down there hear her? Creeping out of her room to see what was downstairs wasn't a typical Lily-like thing to do. What if it was burglars? She didn't like to admit it, but she was still scared of the dark at 13. Something about not knowing where things were or if they were there frightened her--she was always used to knowing a lot of things, her grades were the best in her class. She was beginning to think it was just the cat, scraping the floors. She didn't have any siblings yet, but her mother was due in a few months. She passed her parents room, considered waking them. She ditched the idea as soon as it came into her head. She wanted to live, so over waking her parents in the middle of the night and creeping downstairs to the unknown, she'd take the latter.Her footsteps seemed magnified in the night as she made her way down the stairs. The scraping began again. She was tempted to call out, ask what or whom was down there. She wasn't sure what stopped her from doing it. Maybe it was her want to, for once in her life, do something exciting. She placed her foot down, and the stair let out a low, drawn out creek. Then something grabbed her from behind.
