Crocodilians are part of a group of reptiles known as the archosaurs, which also includes dinosaurs and pterosaurs. This means that while they may not look like it, crocodiles and birds are more closely related than one might think. They look extremely different from each other since neither are typical representatives of each group, but if you look up some of their extinct relatives it starts making a lot more sense.
